Signs of a Power Steering Leak in Your Volvo
Have you found yourself wondering if your Volvo may have a power steering leak? First, let’s jump into what exactly causes a power steering leak and how to be sure that is what you are dealing with. A potential problem of this sort can often lead to confusion and leaving you, the owner, unsure of where to go next. So, let’s take a closer look.
What is a power steering leak?
A power steering leak can occur whenever your car begins losing power steering fluid. This loss of fluid can come from multiple different places. Just as motor oil ensures your engine works properly, a healthy power steering fluid ensures that your vehicle handles properly.
A loss or decrease in power steering fluid can cause your vehicle to become rather hard to drive. A car’s age and how often you drive it, as well as normal time and wear, are the most common causes of a power steering leak.
With excessive added mileage and age the o-rings and seals in your car will begin to break down and small parts of these o-rings and/or seals will find their way into your car’s power steering fluid.
That being said, a leak can also steam from a valve, pump, o-rings or seals, or a combination of these. Now that you know what a power steering leak is, we can move on to some signs to keep an eye out for.
Common Warning Signs
A power steering leak can show many different signs that you should be aware of to properly identify whether or not this is what is going on with your vehicle.
Upon driving your Volvo, your steering should be silent. If you begin to notice a grinding, whining, or groaning sound, this is a good indication that there may be a problem with the power steering pump, a loss of power steering fluid, or both.
A slipping or sluggish feeling while steering is also a tell-tell sign of a problematic pump and/or fluid loss.
You may also begin to notice a red or pinkish fluid on the ground where your Volvo is typically parked. If the location of the fluid is in conjunction with the center of your vehicle, it is most likely power steering fluid.
If you find your vehicle experiencing any of these symptoms, it is best not to drive it, and call your mechanic as soon as possible.
Do power steering leaks occur often?
The power steering system typically lasts well over 100,000 miles with little to no problems in most vehicles. That being said, power steering leaks are usually considered avoidable with proper routine maintenance of your Volvo. Keeping the system free of contaminants and the fluid fresh is key to ensuring a long-lasting power steering system.
