Common Signs of a Failing Clutch Disc in Your Volkswagen
The Volkswagen brand is known for its reliable vehicles and popularity. However, they can develop problems with the clutch, including with the clutch’s disc. Let’s talk about the purpose of the clutch disc, the signs and causes of a failing clutch disc, and where to take your Volkswagen when clutch disc issues arise.
The Purpose of the Clutch Disc
The clutch disc is part of a manual transmission clutch. Every time the clutch is engaged and disengaged, it causes friction that wears down the clutch and its parts over time.
The clutch disc is located in-between the pressure plate and the flywheel. It consists of a splined hub and a metal plate. The purpose of the clutch disc is to get the splines from the center to engage with the splines on the input shaft. This causes the input shaft and disc to turn together. As they turn together, the disc can slide back and forth on the shaft.
With the clutch being responsible for shifting gears in an automatic vehicle, any sign of damage or failure should be inspected as soon as possible.
Signs of a Failing Clutch Disc
Below are some of the key signs of a failing clutch disc. Should you encounter any of these issues or anything else abnormal with your clutch, you should take your car to your trusted Volkswagen mechanic immediately:
- Chattering: If you hear a chattering sound when engaging the clutch, it is likely the clutch disc is contaminated. Oil or other contaminants on the clutch disc causes uneven friction, resulting in the clutch disc slipping and grabbing erratically instead of moving and seating itself smoothly.
- Slipping: Slipping is a sign the clutch disc and possibly also the pressure plate are worn out. Every time the clutch is in use, it experiences wear-and-tear, resulting in parts that will need to be replaced. When your clutch begins to slip, the clutch disc slips against the flywheel as opposed to gripping it as it should. Oil and contaminants can also cause slippage.
- Sticking and Dragging: If the clutch disc drags on the flywheel or the pressure plate, it will cause sticking and dragging with the clutch. When depressing the clutch, the gears can grind during shifting and the clutch may become difficult to disengage when pressing the clutch pedal.
- Squealing or Growling Noises: Should you hear squealing, growling or chirping noises coming from the clutch, the clutch disc may be damaged. If not the clutch disc, then another part of the clutch is likely broken or failing. When you hear any unusual noises coming from your clutch, you should take it seriously and take your vehicle to your trusted Volkswagen service and repair center as soon as possible.
Causes of a Failing Clutch Disc
Understanding the causes of a failing clutch disc is important because, while some of the causes are unavoidable, some of them can be prevented:
- Engine oil or transmission fluid leaks. Leaks can damage the clutch disc. If you suspect engine oil or transmission fluid leaks, you should take your vehicle in as soon as possible. Your mechanic may suggest replacing the rear main seal or transmission input shaft seal as a preventative measure against future repairs that are more expensive.
- The clutch disc is defective. If your clutch disc is found to be defective, the transmission input shaft should be inspected and replaced as well, if it is needed.
- Incorrect cable adjustment: Incorrect cable adjustment or linkage can cause the clutch disc to wear out prematurely.
- Aggressive use of the clutch. If you rest your foot on the clutch pedal, not allowing the clutch to release completely, it is called “riding” the clutch. This can cause premature wear on it, as it’s being used more than usual.
